About Students

Participants are senior undergraduate students in BYU’s Mechanical Engineering Department. These students: 
  • Have completed rigorous coursework in design, systems thinking, thermodynamics, materials, mechanics, and mechatronics
  • Are trained in CAD (SolidWorks), manufacturing processes, testing and validation, and project management
  • Are prepared to work as consultants and engineers, simulating a real professional R&D environment
  • Operate within a structured design and innovation process led by seasoned coaches and faculty
  • Are supported with access to BYU’s high-quality fabrication, machining, and testing facilities

Program Goals
Capstone students will: 
  1. Apply the engineering design process to solve a real-world challenge from an industry sponsor
  2. Develop hands-on skills in ideation, modeling, prototyping, and validation
  3. Collaborate in a team to meet engineering standards and deliver professional-quality work
  4. Communicate clearly through written reports, presentations, and technical documentation
  5. Gain exposure to industry expectations and develop readiness for professional engineering careers
  6. Balance creativity, cost, performance, and manufacturability in their proposed solutions

Format Description
The Manufacturing Track of the BYU Mechanical Engineering Capstone Program offers organizations the opportunity to collaborate with a senior engineering team on real-world challenges focused on production systems, factory layout, automation, quality control, and cost reduction. 

This is a hands-on, year-long consulting engagement that results in tangible process improvements, documentation, and implementation-ready recommendations. Projects are supported by both faculty advisors and experienced industry coaches.

  • Projects can be sponsored from anywhere
  • Sponsors are expected to join virtual kickoff and check-ins (monthly) and attend the final design fair in person or virtually
  • BYU teams will operate from campus, utilizing in-person collaboration and on-site fabrication facilities
  • Sponsors should be available for questions, feedback, and milestone reviews (1–2 hours/month expected)
  • Project-specific visits or site tours are optional but welcome if geographically feasible

No Compensation Required

Other Requirements
Sponsorship Fee: Approximately $22,000 per project, which covers materials, tools, staff support, and access to BYU facilities
Project Scope: Sponsors will define a design challenge/problem statement with faculty to ensure appropriate scope
Coaching Role: A project coach is provided by BYU, but sponsoring organization should provide a technical liaison
Project Fit: Projects must include open-ended design and engineering work—not maintenance or repetitive tasks
IP Rights: Sponsors retain rights to the deliverables and intellectual property created
Participation: Sponsors are encouraged to attend mid-year reviews and the final Capstone Design Fair presentation
