About Students

These are senior undergraduate students majoring in Mechanical Engineering at BYU. Students in the Manufacturing Track have specialized coursework and experience in: 
  • Manufacturing systems and automation
  • Engineering economics and costing
  • Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma
  • CAD modeling and design for manufacturability
  • Quality control and statistical process control
  • Data analysis, root cause investigation, and process validation
Students work 8 months (Sept–April) on each project as a team of 4–7, supported by faculty, industry mentors, and technical staff.

Student Level:   Bachelor Degree

Student Time Commitment:   Full Time

Program Goals
Students will: 
  1. Identify and analyze a real-world manufacturing or production issue
  2. Apply Lean, Six Sigma, and DFM/DFA principles to propose improvements
  3. Design and validate a prototype solution, process, or system
  4. Generate technical documentation (CAD files, work instructions, BOMs, etc.)
  5. Practice professional communication, project planning, and presentation delivery
  6. Build readiness for full-time careers in engineering, operations, or advanced manufacturing

Team Structure: 
  • 1 team of 5–7 senior students
  • Guided by a faculty coach and BYU engineering staff
  • Supported by industry liaisons from the sponsoring organization
Engagement Expectations: Sponsors typically commit ~1 hour/week for guidance and feedback.  Student teams meet independently 8–10 hours per week.

  • $22,000 sponsorship fee per project
  • Covers faculty support, student resources, materials, fabrication access, and program management
  • Sponsors retain ownership of all deliverables and IP
  • Projects must include a clearly defined challenge or opportunity within manufacturing or process engineering
  • Sponsors should assign a technical point of contact to meet monthly with the team
  • Sponsors will be recognized publicly unless anonymity is requested
